AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX Review

The throughput is crucial during the data processing process: the more a user can accomplish, the more contracts can be fulfilled. Users of workstations are often computing-bound, and often use a variety of resources to solve problems, be it cores, memory, storage, or graphics acceleration. In its latest foray into the market. This topic is all about AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX Review in 2022.

The AMD has introduced Threadripper 2, which breaks the old pricing and core limit: the 2990WX provides 32 cores and 64 threads for only $1799. So let’s continue to the topic of AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX review.

The AMD’s Threadripper 2990WX is certainly an unusual CPU. AMD has made a 32 core CPU that appears to be quite good for rendering. That’s about all we can prove with our standard test suite. This article is all about AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX review so let’s get started.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX Review

Recent developments in the CPU core arms race have been spectacular. AMD, however, was tired of mucking around with their 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen CPU and went big with their Ryzen Threadripper CPU.

However, they recently launched the king of all their CPUs, the AMD Ryzen 2990WX. With its 32-cores and 64-threads, this CPU delivers some extreme performance. It runs at 4.2 GHz and has a max-boost clock of 4.2 GHz, which is even more impressive.

This isn’t a good choice for gamers, even with its gaming modes, since most games still prefer their standard Ryzen CPUs, such as the 2700X, which still have plenty of cores leftover for backend processing.

Even so, if you spend all day rendering with Handbrake, recording with Cubase, analyzing with Blender, etc. Then you simply cannot have too many cores. Waiting time costs money, and the 2990WX is set to cut it down considerably.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors will get that Pinnacle Ridge to upgrade after the regular Ryzen processors have been refreshed. As part of this review, we take a look at AMD‘s all-new 32-core / 64-threads Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX, and we have some test results to share with you. Welcome to the multi- and many-core revolution!

There are two new Threadripper Generation2 processors with the suffix WX, as you probably noticed. WX is used in AMD’s PRO series product line. Everything greater than 16 cores will be called an X, while the 24 and 32 core processors will be called WX for designers and creators.

A six-core processor is a real deal for gamers if you think that a 24-core or 32-core is a proper gaming CPU. There are no more than that many cores available for professional workloads such as virtualization and raytracing. Although, the new products are injected into the consumer market.

Four new generations 2 SKUs are based on 12nm ZEN+ Pinnacle Ridge dies and are expected to offer up to 16 cores the 2920X (12c/24t) and 2950X (16c/32t). With its new WX series, there is the 2970X with 24 cores and 48 threads; and then there is the 2990WX with 32 cores and 64 threads, which is unprecedented for SOHO and consumer applications.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is a good processor because it delivers the best performance of most high-end desktop processors. AMD leads the Intel Core i9-7980XE by such a wide margin in Cinebench (multi-core). Additionally, our graphs serve as a testament to the tremendous development the HEDT space has seen in the past two years.

It turns out the Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is severely underperforming in both Geekbench and HandBrake. This is likely due to early release jitters and applications not recognizing all cores.

When it comes to gaming, the Threadripper 2990 WX consistently matches the frames per second (FPS) put out by the Intel Core i9-7980XE. Although, no one should spend close to two grand for this CPU just to play games.

Best Motherboard for AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX

AMD’s HEDT (high-end desktop) Ryzen processor is based on the X399 chipset and is known as Threadripper. This is because motherboards running on the X399 chipset support the socket TR4.

The AMD Threadripper CPU also has two generations; the first features the 1900x, 1920x, and 1950x with 16 cores, and the second features the 2920x, 2950x, 2970WX, and 2990WX with up to an insane 32 cores.

This makes them ideal for heavy workloads like 3D modeling, content creation, etc. Compared to Intel’s lineup, it offers very good value compared to the X299 platform. Following are the few AMD ryzen threadripper 2990WX compatible motherboards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ryzen Threadripper good for gaming?

The Threadripper processor is great for gaming. In terms of single-core performance, they match, and often surpass, Ryzen chips, while outperforming everything Intel produces in multi-core performance, too. In my opinion, Threadripper is HEDT done right.

Is AMD Threadripper better than Intel i9?

Based on their basic specifications, Core i9s and Threadrippers appear to be competitive. AMD, however, offers faster base clock frequencies and more CPU memory cache than Intel®. Boost speeds and power are more impressive on the Core i9 than on the Threadripper.

Is Threadripper better than EPYC?

Due to Epyc’s efficiency, scalability, and AMD’s Infinity Guard security features, it is a more suitable choice for servers than most workstation applications. Because of Threadripper’s higher core frequency and official support for Windows 10, it’s the best option for users and applications using traditional workstations.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX features the largest specs on a consumer CPU yet and it has the performance to back it up. It isn’t for everyone, of course. A single-chip costs more than 1400$. Even those who can afford it should rethink whether or not they actually need so much processing power.

A Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is intoxicatingly powerful if you want the best CPU for performance. Basically, it eliminates all the delays and is ready to handle anything you ask it to do. This processor is best for those who want to minimize the downtime they spend waiting for renders to finish.
